Healing Generations. Empowering the Future.
African Institute for Trauma and Resilience
Africa is not short on strength. It's short on access.
Trauma doesn't skip our people because we are resilient. It stays because nobody gave us the tools to heal it. The African Institute for Trauma and Resilience exists to change that.
Let's be honest.
We are not struggling because we are weak.
We are struggling because nobody taught us how to stop running.
Imagine being chased for thirty seconds. You'd catch your breath and move on. Now imagine that chase never stops. Not a person behind you, but poverty, family trauma, cultural pressure, and the weight of daily survival that never lets your system rest.
That is what our people carry, and our bodies were never built to hold it that long.
We call it resilience. We put it on t-shirts. But resilience is not healing. It's a band aid over a wound that never closed. Nobody in the middle of the fire is dancing in the flames. They are surviving, and surviving is not the same as healing.
Trauma doesn't care where it came from or how long your community has normalized it. It sits in the body, quietly, until the body can no longer hold it.
Africa is not short on strength. But strength without healing is just pain with better posture.
It is time to give our people something more.
The Mission
This is not charity.
This is coming home.
The African Institute for Trauma and Resilience was not built by an outsider looking in. It was built by a first-generation Nigerian American who has sat in the rooms, walked the streets, and felt the weight of what our people carry, and who refused to believe that weight was permanent.
AITR exists to bring evidence-based, trauma-informed healing to Africa. Not a watered down version, not a western framework dropped in without context. Real, culturally grounded tools, adapted for where people are and who their people are.
We are not here to save Africa. Africa does not need saving. It needs investment, access, and people who believe its healers deserve the same training and support as anyone else in the world.
That is what we are building. One training, one community, one healer at a time.
Healing Generations. Empowering the Future.

FOR THE DIASPORA
You don't have to be there to show up for your people.
Whether Africa is where your story began or simply where your heart has always been — if you believe our people deserve access to healing, there is a place for you here. Whether that is through a donation, a sponsorship, or simply staying connected to the work — your support makes the mission possible.

FOR ORGANIZATIONS & UNIVERSITIES
Your people are ready. So are we.
If you are leading an institution, a workplace, or a university community that is ready to take mental health seriously — we will come to you. AITR offers trainings and workshops that meet your people where they are and give them tools they will actually use.
Real Tools. Real Access. Right Now.
We are building something that has never existed in this space before.
And while the full vision is still unfolding — what we have right now is already making an impact.
The Training
Workshops & Trainings
From university lecture halls to workplace wellness sessions — AITR brings trauma-informed, evidence-based training directly to your community. These are not generic presentations. They are culturally grounded, experiential, and built to leave people with tools they can actually use.
The Community
WhatsApp Community
Healing does not stop when the training ends. Our WhatsApp community gives practitioners, students, and advocates a real-time space to ask questions, share cases, and stay connected to the work — and to each other. Because our people deserve ongoing support, not just a one time event.
The Content
YouTube Channel
Free game. No gatekeeping. Our YouTube channel is where we break down trauma, resilience, and evidence-based healing approaches in a way that is accessible, honest, and culturally relevant. Subscribe and learn at your own pace — wherever you are in the world.
Coming Soon
The AITR Fellowship
We are building a fellowship program for students and recent graduates who are ready to go deeper — learning trauma-informed approaches, serving their communities, and becoming the healers their people need. Applications are not yet open but the waitlist is.
Hey, I'm Lisa Ibekwe.
LCSW · Clinical Director · Child & Adolescent Therapist · First Gen Nigerian American · Trauma Specialist
My parents are Nigerian immigrants. I grew up navigating two worlds — the expectations of one culture and the reality of living in another. That experience taught me early that identity, trauma, and healing are deeply connected. And that the tools that exist in the west to address that connection are not reaching the people who need them most.
I have sat in rooms in Nigeria. I have done the trainings. I have watched people have breakthroughs in a single session that they had never been given access to before. And I have come home knowing that what we are building with AITR is not optional. It is necessary.
I am not here as an outsider. I am here as a daughter of the diaspora who refuses to leave her people behind.
